Alongside our range of urine drug test kits, Drug-Aware have alcohol test kits for use on saliva, urine and breath samples. We offer breathalyser breath alcohol kits, disposable saliva alcohol test strips and urine alcohol tests. We also offer two kinds of electronic breathalyser units - one which can accurately screen for alcohol in breath but is considered to be an indicator and another unit which provides a test result which is fully evidential.

Overall, we feel that we have an alcohol screening test to suit every requirement.

Try our AlcoScreen saliva alcohol test kits – an oral test kit which can detect your blood alcohol level in just 2 minutes.

Our Alco-Screen saliva alcohol test kits are designed as a simple oral test strip which indicates the patient’s blood alcohol level, from a level of zero tolerance to several times over the UK Legal Drink Driving Limit. These alcohol tests are the units most commonly used by our healthcare customers due to their low cost, ease of use and the ability to measure blood alcohol levels. They certainly represent a very simple semi quantitative alcohol test kit at a price that is kind to your budget.

The AlcoCheck breathalyzer units are a Home Office Approved modification of the roadside breath alcohol test kit used by British Police Forces for several decades. It contains a quantity of yellow crystals which turn a green colour in the presence of alcohol when a breath sample is blown through it.  This unit tests to a pre-determined level - the UK Legal Drink Drive Limit, but will allow you to see trace levels below the limit. This is the alcohol screener most frequently ordered by our corporate customers when conducting pre-employment, random or accident based employee drug and alcohol screening in the workplace.

Even though alcohol is a frequently used legal substance, there is undisputed evidence that it impairs the user and can often be misused or abused.  For that reason, there is a legal drink-driving limit of 80 mg/dl or 0.08% BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) enforced by law in the UK.

When ingested, alcohol is broken down by the liver at the rate of roughly one unit per hour (a pint of normal strength beer is typically two units). As a result, it is quite possible to still be under the influence the next morning if you have drunk to excess the previous night. This is shown by the fact that every year in Britain more than 25,000 people lose their driving licences the morning after a night's drinking.

To help you to exercise caution, the calculation below can be used to estimate your level of risk after having consumed alcohol the night before.

1 Unit of alcohol =

½ Pint ordinary strength beer or...

1 standard glass of table wine or...

1 standard glass of sherry or...

1 single measure of spirits.

It is recommended that you allow at least 1 hour per 1 unit of alcohol before driving or operating heavy machinery or electrical equipment in order to make certain that you are not under the influence of alcohol.

This simple formula will help:

Number of units consumed – Number of hours since last drink = Alcohol content

For instance: Someone drinks 6 pints of an normal strength beer (12 units) finishing drinking at 11pm. They begin work at 8am the next day. (9 Hours later).

12 Units - 9 hours = 3. In this situation, the person might still have 3-4 units of alcohol left in their body whilst driving to work the next day - risking both Police prosecution and the safety of others. 3-4 Units of alcohol will bring most people to the UK legal driving limit.  Please exercise caution.

Drug-Aware drug awareness training, drugs and alcohol policy development, and training in workplace employee screening procedures:

Many companies now adopt the approach of a caring employer and have a substance misuse policy to protect their employees from the detrimental effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.  However, setting up and implementing a policy can be daunting to say the least!  We can take care of everything for you, or train your management staff so that they start out on the right foot.  We even review existing policies to offer improvements which make them more legally defensible or more user friendly and streamlined on a daily basis.

In any event, having managers and staff familiar with how to recognise the signs and symptoms of drug / alcohol abuse in the workplace, knowing how to recognise the substances themselves (along with the associated paraphernalia) and fully understanding their legal obligations is vital in today’s working environment.  So whether you have a policy or not, this is a great starting point.

Not all company substance misuse policies involve drug testing, but when they do we feel it is invaluable to train management in how to either conduct the screening (chain of custody procedures) or at least to give them a sound base of knowledge for when our on-site collection staff collect samples on your behalf.

For all topics, training sessions can begin at 1 hour staff briefings and can extend up to 2 day workshops.  Half day seminars for lower management and 1 day sessions for senior management are the most common solution to your awareness training needs.
